Intarsia is an inlay technique in which pieces of wood, stone, and/or gemstone are meticulously cut, polished, and composed to create a mosaic-like image with an illusion of depth. Although compared to mosaic, intarsia is a different and more intricate process.
Production of a simple intarsia pendant may involve over 80 steps, while an elaborate box or vase may involve ten or more workers to execute 2,500 different steps. It is remarkable that these pieces are still being produced by hand in a world that has seen so many changes.
